1960s

Though introduced as a concept in the early 1800s, stock options grew substantially in popularity in the mid-1900s. In the 1960s, stock options continued to be the most used form of long-term equity incentive. In addition to stock options, public corporations began to use restricted stock awards, another form of long-term equity subject to vesting.1

1971

The term “Silicon Valley” was first coined by a journalist2. This name was adopted because of the “region's association with the silicon transistor, which is used in all modern microprocessors.”3 It refers to the hub of tech companies, including Apple, Meta, Cisco, and other major companies like Visa.

1980

Apple went public at $22.00 per share. “More than 40 out of 1,000 Apple employees become instant millionaires. As Apple’s biggest shareholder, 25-year-old Steve Jobs ends the day with a net worth of $217 million.”4

1999

Robert Pitti, one of Liquid Stock’s founding partners, saw the potential in private company stock options. At the time he was at Thomas Weisel Partners, a prominent growth-oriented investment bank. He formed the first fund of its kind to help employees exercise their private company stock options.

2002

For the first time since the Dot Com Bubble Collapse, two renowned tech companies in Silicon Valley successfully broke the ice with their IPOs: PayPal and Google.5

2012

Facebook went public at $38.00 per share. “​​At an estimated $23 billion, the 3,000-odd Facebook employees [stood] to collect an average of more than $7 million each.”6

2014

A new transaction structure was created by Robert Pitti allowing option exercise and private share liquidity transactions to be moved away from a traditional loan structure.  

2017

Robert Pitti and Greg Martin, two of Liquid Stock’s founding partners, closed an $80 million private share liquidity transaction with a shareholder of a US-based on-demand transportation startup, a company that would go on to IPO.

2018

Liquid Stock was founded by Robert Pitti, Greg Martin, and Jeff Le Sage.

2019

Liquid Stock raised its first fund, Liquid Stock I, LP.7
